What Does Inside Mount Mean?

Inside Mount Roller Shade

Choosing an inside mount means that the window coverings will be installed and hung on the inside of the window frame or box. This option is often preferred for its clean and polished appearance.

For an inside mount to work effectively, your window box should ideally be deep enough to accommodate the shades. This ensures that the window covering will sit flush with the frame, creating a streamlined and sophisticated look. However, if your windowsills are shallow, this mount option may not be the best choice for you, as it could lead to an awkward fit or appearance.

What Does Outside Mount Mean?

Outside Mount Roller Shade

An outside mount does not imply that the roller shade, or any window covering, will be mounted on the exterior of the house. Roller shades, particularly those made from fabric, are not designed to withstand outdoor weather conditions.

Instead, an outside mount means that the window coverings will be installed and hung outside of the window frame. This option is particularly ideal for shallow windowsills, as it allows for a more flexible installation that can enhance the overall aesthetic of your space.

Should Roller Shades be Mounted Inside or Outside?

Both mounting types are suitable for roller shades, and the choice ultimately depends on the practicality of your window box and the specific look you wish to achieve. To help you determine the best type for your needs, consider the following questions.

What is the depth of your window box?

At Joydeco, we typically recommend that your window box has at least 1 1/2" of depth for an inside mount. However, the minimum requirement can vary depending on the specific product and lift style you choose. It’s essential to thoroughly read your product's Specifications tab for more detailed information to ensure a proper fit.

How much light control do you want?

When it comes to inside-mounted window coverings, there is often a small sliver of light that seeps in around the sides and bottom of the window. If you want to avoid this extra light and create a more controlled environment, you might consider adding curtains or opting for an outside mount. An outside-mounted roller shade allows for more complete light blockage, effectively reducing the halo effect that can occur with inside mounts. Additionally, an outside mount can create the illusion of taller or wider windows, enhancing the overall visual appeal of your space.

What is your desired aesthetic?

The choice between inside and outside mounts can also significantly impact the overall look of your room. Inside mounts offer a clean, minimalist appearance that can make your windows look more integrated into the room. On the other hand, outside mounts can add depth and dimension, making your windows a focal point in the room. Consider how each option aligns with your personal style and the existing decor in your home.

What is your budget?

Lastly, consider your budget when deciding between inside and outside mounts. While both options can be affordable, the installation process and additional materials needed for outside mounts may affect the overall cost. Be sure to factor in any additional expenses when making your decision.

In conclusion, whether you choose to mount your roller shades inside or outside ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. By considering the depth of your window box, the amount of light control you desire, the aesthetic you wish to achieve, and your budget, you can make an informed decision that enhances your home’s decor. Happy decorating!

How do your windows open?

When considering the installation of roller shades, it's important to think about how your windows operate. If you have a window that tilts forward to open, an inside mounted shade may not provide enough space for it to function properly. In this case, opting for an outside mount would be a much better choice. Conversely, if your window slides open, it is generally better suited for an inside mounted window covering, although it can accommodate either type depending on your preference.

Do you want a no drill headrail?

If your answer is yes, then you must select an inside mount and ensure that there is at least 2 1/2" of depth available to install the no drill blinds headrail. Currently, we do not offer no drill blinds that can be mounted outside. Additionally, it’s important to note that no drill blinds are not recommended for use with PVC window frames, as they may not adhere properly.

How to Install Inside Mounted Roller Shades

Installing inside mounted roller shades can be a straightforward process if you follow the right steps. First, measure the width and height of your window frame to ensure a perfect fit. Next, mark the installation points for the brackets, making sure they are level. Finally, secure the brackets and hang the shades, adjusting them as needed for a smooth operation.

How to Install Outside Mounted Roller Shades

For outside mounted roller shades, the installation process is similar but requires a few additional considerations. Measure the width of the area you want to cover, allowing for extra space on either side for better light blockage. Mark the bracket locations outside the window frame, ensuring they are level. Once the brackets are secured, hang the shades and make any necessary adjustments for a seamless look.
